Although it’s still cold outside, the winter months are slowly coming to an end, which can only mean one thing: spring is coming!

Alongside the increase in outdoor temperature, spring is a great time of year for getting your affairs in order, including your car. That’s right, it’s not just your home that needs a good cleaning; it’s easy for your car to get cluttered amidst the winter madness.

Start spring on the right foot with our ultimate spring cleaning checklist for your beloved motor.

First up we have the less involved car spring cleaning tasks.

Dust is unforgiving in your car. There are so many small crevices and cracks for dust to collect over time, becoming a major eyesore for you and your passengers. Not only does dust not look the best, but it can also cause some mechanical issues if left untouched.

For example, if dust clogs up your fan vents, you may suffocate them and cause them to work harder than needed. To fix this, simply take a damp cloth and wipe down all the dust around the car.

Using a damp cloth is key. Dry cloths will simply move the dust from one place to another, whereas a damp cloth will actually pick the dust up. You can use those slime-like tools that promise to get into your fan vents, but a damp cloth can be just as effective (and cheaper!).

After dusting, the most logical step to take with spring cleaning your car is giving it a good vacuum. Vacuuming before dusting just causes the dust to bounce around the vehicle, so lift as much as you can prior to doing so.

Leave no surface untouched while vacuuming. Carpets, seats, the boot, and floor mats – all of them gather dirt, which should lift quite easily with a vacuum.

With your interior free from dust and freshly vacuumed, now comes the time to get it sparkly clean.

One thing to bear in mind while cleaning your car is that some cleaning solutions will promise varying levels of ‘finish’ on your car’s plastic/leather surfaces. Anything that promises a ‘glossy finish’ will usually contain some sort of additive designed to leave a sheen on top of the plastic. If you’re a purist, avoid these solutions where possible. Instead, stick to anything that has ‘matte finish’ on the bottle.

Gloss finishes might look nice at first glance, but they’ll often leave behind a streaky finish on your clear plastic surfaces (speedo/odometers and infotainment screens, for example). Not only can these look bad, but they can impact your driving. Glossy surfaces also provide less grip compared to matte ones, so practice caution when handling/using your steering wheel.

The average car owner will rarely use tools like pre-wash for their car. But, you’re not average!

Pre-wash is a very useful tool for your car spring cleaning checklist as it does a lot of work with very little effort on your behalf. Before even a drop of water touches your paint’s surface, evenly apply a few sprays of pre-wash to every body panel on your car and let it sit for around 10 minutes.

After enough time has passed, you’ll notice that the pre-wash picks up and releases a lot of the surface-level imperfections in the paint with zero scrubbing – an excellent benefit for both short washes and more involved detailing sessions.

Once your pre-wash has worked its magic, it’s important to get all of the dirt removed from your car. Heading straight in with a sponge at this stage can ruin your paint, so do not skip this step!

With some cold, clean water, work your way around every visible exterior surface of your car until all of the dirt, salt, and asphalt is gone. Don’t forget the wheels!

Depending on how dirty your car was, at this stage, you can potentially call it a rest and be done for the day. But, if you want perfection, the last remaining step of your exterior spring clean is the hand wash.

We advise using the two-bucket method for washing your car. The idea is simple – you have one bucket for rinsing sponges, and the other for adding fresh, cleaning water. This ensures that no dirt makes its way back onto your car after you’ve washed it off.

Although they may sound daunting, some cars have user-serviceable air filters that are easy to reach and work with. Certain vehicles have them in the driver’s footwell, adjacent to the accelerator. They’re usually hidden with a plastic panel, and simply pull outward from their holding compartments for quick removal and replacement.

That’s not the only air filter to change, though. There’s usually an air intake filter to be replaced that sits in your car’s engine bay. The instructions for replacing these will vary depending on your car, but the steps are relatively transferable.

While topping up your oil isn’t necessarily a cleaning task, per se, it is a good idea to check in on your oil at regular intervals. Cleaning is a good opportunity to do this, especially if you’re attempting to clean the engine bay itself.

Simply remove the dip stick and check the oil levels as you usually would. If you see your levels are low, add a bit more fresh oil to the system by locating the filler cap, unscrewing it, and pouring more oil in via a funnel.

An often-overlooked part of mechanical car cleaning and maintenance is the petrol system, and for good reason. The petrol tank isn’t exactly the most visible of elements, so it makes sense why it goes unchecked. 

Thankfully, cleaning the petrol system is a fairly painless exercise, thanks to fuel additives. These solutions are meant to be poured into the tank prior to filling up. As fuel makes its way through your car, the additive will help break down any carbon deposits to help fuel flow through.

If you’re a frequent user of ‘premium’ fuel, you very likely won’t need to do this as often. Premium fuel is designed to have these additives included from the start.

The Cotswolds Romantic Road takes you on a journey through some of England’s most idyllic villages. Starting in Chipping Campden, you’ll pass through picturesque spots like Broadway, Snowshill, and Bourton-on-the-Water. In spring, the Cotswolds come alive with wildflowers and vibrant greenery. Be sure to stop at Snowshill Lavender Fields if the season is right. The route ends in Cirencester, where you can enjoy a countryside walk or visit the town’s historic abbey. 

Tip: Stop at a traditional tearoom for freshly baked scones and clotted cream. 

Distance: 50-60 miles (varies by route) 

Highlights: Mountain views, lakeside drives, and springtime hikes 

The Lake District is magical in spring, with daffodils bursting along the lakeshores and misty mountain views. Start your journey in Ambleside, follow the road to Grasmere (stop by Dove Cottage, William Wordsworth’s former home), and loop around Derwentwater. Drive through Borrowdale Valley for stunning scenery and spot waterfalls cascading down the hillsides. 

Tip: Take a short hike to Tarn Hows or Buttermere for spectacular views of spring blossoms.

The Causeway Coastal Route offers one of the most dramatic coastal drives in the UK. Start in Belfast and follow the winding road north towards Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and the legendary Giant’s Causeway. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of the Irish Sea, with spring wildflowers painting the cliffs in bright colours. Don’t miss the charming town of Cushendun, known for its caves and folklore! 

Tip: Stop for a picnic at Murlough Bay for sweeping coastal views. 

Highlights: Cherry blossoms, orchards in bloom, and charming villages 

Known as the “Garden of England,” Kent bursts to life in spring. The Kent Blossom Trail winds through the county’s apple and cherry orchards, with stops at Tenterden, Sissinghurst, and Chilham. Be sure to visit Sissinghurst Castle Garden, which is famous for its spring blooms. Drive through Biddenden Vineyards for a picturesque view of rolling hills and blossoming fruit trees. 

Tip: Visit a local farm shop for fresh apple cider and spring produce. 

Highlights: Majestic mountains, waterfalls, and lush valleys 

The Llanberis Pass is a short but spectacular drive through the heart of Snowdonia National Park. Starting in Betws-y-Coed, follow the A4086 towards Llanberis, passing dramatic mountain peaks and the shimmering Llyn Padarn. In spring, the valleys are painted with wildflowers, and the air is filled with the sound of rushing streams. Stop at Swallow Falls for a photo op and enjoy the crisp mountain air. 

Tip: Consider a scenic hike up to Cwm Idwal for panoramic views. 

Timing: Aim for early mornings to avoid crowds and catch the best light for photos. 

Car prep: Make sure your car is spring-ready by checking tyre pressure, topping up fluids, and cleaning windows. 

Picnic stops: Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy your meal surrounded by nature.

Top scenic spring drives in the UK

There are so many things to enjoy during the Christmas period. The exchanging of presents, seeing distant family, the casual jaunts around your favourite local festive market.

We’re quite partial to the latter. There’s a lot to love about a Christmas market, from seasonal sweet treats and drinks, to the quaint stalls featuring decorations and gifts.

To truly make your Christmas magical this year, we advise prioritising getting out there and attending as many markets as you can. Here, we’ll cover exactly how to do it with our compilation of the best UK Christmas markets.

We’ll start our journey in London, working our way throughout the nation towards Scotland and ticking off the most picturesque routes and markets on the way.

While there are other winter wonderland celebrations around the UK, the celebration held in Hyde Park is perhaps the most well-known and anticipated.

Winter Wonderland happens to be one of the biggest Christmas celebrations in the nation, and combined with London’s excellent transport links, it makes a great starting location for your UK Christmas market road trip.

Approximately 113 miles Westbound lives Bath’s Christmas Market. Found central to many of the more established shopping facilities, this market sits squarely within the Roman Baths situated in Abbey, Bath.

The ancient surroundings make this Christmas market one of the most picturesque in the UK. This, combined with a potential scenic route through the country lanes of the North Wessex Downs makes your journey filled with Instagrammable moments.

Although Bath Christmas market isn’t as grand as Hyde Park, the quaint vibe and pleasant journey are certain to pique your interest.

Heading North now, and we’d be remiss not to mention the absolute experience that is the Frankfurt Christmas market in Birmingham. If you’re a fan of Germanic Christmas traditions, great food and drink, and a lively atmosphere, this Christmas market will not disappoint.

This market is an entertaining stop, but also a practical one. Birmingham sits roughly in the middle of the UK, making it a logical place to plan your next break. Remember, while enjoyment is important, so is planning.

It’ll take you roughly two hours to travel from Bath to Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas market (101 miles). That journey can be taken throughout the Cotswolds to make it even more pleasant.

Fans of historic preservation will love this next stop. York is a bit of a hot spot in the UK for history, its streets practically brimming with Roman roots.

This is the quintessential Christmas market for a small-medium-sized city. There are plenty of market stalls to choose from, serving up hot and cold food, and good connections to transport links around York make getting around the rest of the city a breeze.

As a further bonus, this bustling Christmas fair can be reached with a quick trip through the ever-so-beautiful Peak District.

As another highly regarded, well-renowned UK Christmas market, we’ve selected Edinburgh as a final stop on your road trip to end on an extremely high note.

Taking over most of Edinburgh’s city centre, this market has everything you’d expect. Fun rides, incredible food, and a lively atmosphere – it’s the ultimate British Christmas market experience.

The market arrives every year and takes over with bright lights, food stalls, and entertainment well into the evening. Combining this with the journey through the A68 toward Northumberland’s National Park, you and your loved ones will certainly be in for a treat.

To be clear, when we say a detail, we don’t just mean a couple of quid for your local automatic car wash. Those things are notorious for leaving scratches, swirl marks, and water spots all over a car’s paint job. The perfect Christmas gift for car enthusiasts

With car manufacturers constantly stepping up their game, it’s no surprise that each year brings even more choice and smarter options. The race for the best, most efficient ride is on, and 2025 promises to be packed with stand-out vehicles.

Top Small Car: Toyota Yaris (2024 facelift)

Back when the fourth generation of Yaris was revised in 2020, it hit the market with a sporty new look and a host of features as standard. This Yaris sold well, and for a while it was hard to find without putting yourself on a waiting list – the hallmark of any top car.

In 2024, the new Yaris received a slight facelift with some upgraded internal tech like USB-C sockets, wireless charging, and even the option of a slightly more powerful engine. Now with an extra 20 horsepower, for those who wanted a little more power from the standard 114 horsepower hybrid. All of this makes the Yaris one of the best cars 2024 had to offer.

If you already had your eyes on the Yaris, this 2024 model should probably be your new de facto choice. We fully expect the used market to be rampant with these wonderfully efficient motors in the new year, making 2025 a great time to enjoy Toyota’s hybrid mastery.

With a high Euro n-cap safety rating of five stars, brilliant fuel efficiency, and unmatched manufacturer warranty, the Yaris continues to be a solid choice.  

The Dacia Duster has a bit of an image problem. Yes, it’s from the Renault-owned, budget-conscious brand of Dacia, but that needn’t be an issue.

When the Duster was launched to the UK market in 2013, it became an instant hit among financially-savvy car buyers at the time. With its low price point, however, came an equally low amount of mod-cons and features. Some models were even available without a radio, would you believe!

However, the Duster has done a lot of growing up in the 10 or so years that it’s been in the UK, and the new version released towards the end of 2024 is a big upgrade. The diesel-fuelled model has been exiled and replaced with a hybrid petrol model, meaning smoother take-offs and decent fuel economy, the interior is more akin to a car released in this century, and the exterior rivals the looks of more expensive SUVs from Range Rover and Audi.

While the original Duster was well received, this new version is even more hotly anticipated. The SUV has won ‘Value Car of the Year’ in the UK Motor Awards, while Carbuyer has already given it the ‘Car of the Year’ award for 2025.

We fully expect thousands of owners to embrace the new Duster in 2025. Will you be one of them?

The Renault Clio has been feeling a little unloved in recent years. While Renault figured out its identity crisis throughout the mid to late 2010s, bouncing between sticking to what it knows and innovating, the Clio became a bit of a moot point in the car buying process. Options from Ford, Nissan and Toyota were simply more attractive, with better options, features, and fuel economy.

The newest Renault Clio draws a line under all this uncertainty and hits back with a revised chassis, new powertrain options, and a totally modern exterior to give Renault the wow factor it once had with its Renault Sport line of Clios.

This year, the Clio took home the award for ‘Small Car of the Year’ in the UK Car Awards, while Carsa lists it as one of the safest small cars to buy in 2024 thanks to its exceptionally high Euro n-cap rating.

If there’s something to know about Volvo, it’s that when they do 4x4s, they do them well.

The Volvo EX60 is the Swedish manufacturer’s latest foray into the all-wheel drive market. We’ve classified it as a 4x4 but, in all honesty, the EX60 sits somewhere in between the modern SUV and the 4x4. Yes, it has all-wheel drive which ticks the main 4x4 criteria, but the EX60 isn’t big, bulky, and in your face – its footprint is surprisingly small for this market segment, helping it fill some pretty niche use cases.

The EX60 specifically is the fully electric equivalent to the current XC60; a car that has won numerous car of the year awards in its previous iterations. Most recently, it won the ‘Best Towcar’ award from TMS Motor Group, while previously taking the ‘Best Used Large SUV’ award in the What Car? Used Car of the Year awards in 2021.

Volvo has made some pretty innovative alterations and changes to pave the way for this new version, including integrating the battery pack into the floor of the vehicle for a more efficient use of space.

With the brand already having a few outings in the electric market including the likes of the EX30 and EC40, we’re excited to see what this SUV/4x4 brings to the table when it launches in 2025.

Polestar, Volvo’s electric vehicle sister company, has been slowly but surely building a name for itself in the EV space since it stormed into the market around 2021 with the Polestar 2.

The newest addition to its lineup, the Polestar 4, is on track to be one of the brand’s best models yet. This model fits squarely between the 2 and 3 size-wise (which can be a little confusing), and brings with it the same level of connectivity, innovation, and style as seen by its counterparts.

With both of those models taking home some runaway victories in car award shows, there’s every reason to be excited about the Polestar 4. The Polestar 3, , shocked the market in the prestigious Good Design Awards, taking a gold award for product design, as well as winning the ‘Best Exterior Design’ and ‘Best in Class’ award in the automotive category. In fact, the Polestar 4 won ‘Production Car Design of the Year’ from Car Design News in 2023 – a coveted award in such a competitive market segment.

Having stayed in the market, the Polestar brand is starting to break away from some of the Tesla similarity claims that once plagued the name and has now developed a range of cars fit for a wide range of uses.
