Cars these days are unrecognisable compared to previous years, both in terms of aesthetics and technical features. 

Much like our smartphones, modern cars are equipped with onboard processors that control aspects of the vehicle, from monitoring tyre pressure to controlling gearboxes.

From time to time, though, cars inevitably break down. The exact causes of these breakdowns are sometimes obscure. Thankfully, the motoring industry has developed an innovative approach to solving these sorts of problems with the Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) port. 

Find out what the OBD port does, where you can find yours, and how they could potentially get you out of some tricky situations with your car. 

The OBD port is a universal connector that mechanics can use to tap into a vehicle’s computer for running all sorts of tests and diagnostics. 

The history of the device goes as far back as 1968, when Volkswagen introduced its first form of on-board computer system. This invention made use of capacitors, resistors, and sensors to monitor many parts of the vehicle like road speed and engine temperature. 

Since 1996, every single car is legally required to be equipped with an OBD II port. Before this, manufacturers were free to adopt this technology by any means they wished. This variation introduced significant costs for mechanics who were required to buy different tools  for each manufacturer’s design. This all began to change in 1987, with the introduction of OBD I.

There are two versions of OBD ports: OBD I and OBD II. OBD II is the direct successor to OBD I and introduces some improvements to the first generation of this technology. 

While both are used to diagnose car problems, the second generation of this technology is much more popular. With so much jargon being thrown around, you may be wondering: what’s the difference between OBD 1 and OBD 2?

Namely, the main benefits of this second iteration of OBD technology are centred around the accuracy of fault detection. While OBD I was primarily focused on energy consumption and power output, OBD II can universally diagnose more intricate issues with a set of error codes that can be used across multiple vehicles. 

This is what ultimately made OBD II stand out the most as it offers greater fault detection abilities, and even the ability for one reader to be used across multiple vehicles. 

 While the main use of the OBD port is focused on vehicle diagnostics, as time has passed, vehicle accessory manufacturers have developed some further uses that go far beyond the needs of mechanics. 

By using OBD scanners, users can identify potentially major mechanical faults within their vehicles. These faults can range from an engine misfire to pinpointing a faulty sensor. 

Thanks to the technical improvements provided by OBD II, a further benefit that OBD brings comes through being able to interact with the vehicles Engine Control Unit (ECU). This allows existing engine settings to be read and changed in pursuit of increased power or economy.

New drivers sometimes find it difficult to pay for car insurance due to the high prices they face as an inexperienced motorist. However, some insurers may offer new drivers the ability to have a ‘black box’ installed in their vehicle that monitors driving behaviour. This allows insurers to offer lower-priced premiums, granted while restricting new drivers to a curfew and limited mileage. 

These devices can be attached to OBD ports as a hidden means of tracking a driver’s day-to-day progress. 

It’s important to know the OBD port location on your car. This can come in handy in case of an engine emergency.

While the exact location of an OBD port varies on a car-by-car basis, they are frequently found within the dashboard alongside the steering column. If you’re unsure, you should consult your vehicle’s manual for further guidance.  

Appearance-wise, the OBD II port is a 16 pin connector that is shaped like a rectangle.

What is an OBD port and what are they used for?

If you’re a driver, you’re familiar with petrol stations: you fill up your car, pay for fuel and leave.

However, sometimes, things don’t go smoothly: someone may be at a filling station for too long, chat away on their phone, or, in the worst cases, start lighting up a cigarette.

Most drivers approach filling up their car in the right way, and the whole process is smooth; nevertheless, that doesn’t stop some drivers from ruining the experience for others.

Here, we explain to newer drivers how they should use a petrol station, discuss some petrol filling tips and list common forecourt faux pas.

So, you’ve passed your test, bought a car, and got insurance on it, but have you filled it up yet? How do petrol stations work?

Funnily enough, you can spend weeks or months learning how to drive and never fill up your car.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to go to the petrol station and start panicking just yet. Below, we’ll show you how to use a petrol station step by step.

The first step is the easiest: find a petrol station and queue up. Don’t cut in queue and drive carefully.

In terms of choosing a petrol station, the choice is up to you. If you’re running very low on fuel, then you won’t have much choice. However, if you know a petrol station is cheaper elsewhere, maybe hold on and go there.

You can check fuel prices before you queue up. They depict the pence per litre for petrol and diesel, which will help you budget your fuel costs.

Turn off the car engine before you fill up

Right before you start filling up your car, make sure to double-check the engine is off before you fill up. While it is possible to fill up with the engine running, there have been some reports of flames being ignited due the various reactions occurring while the engine turns over. The risk is small, but there have been rare cases of cars igniting when this happens.

Find your fuel cap and take it off. If you’re not sure where it is, you can look at your car dashboard. Find your fuel gauge, then there should be an arrow next to it pointing to the side of the car where the fuel cap is.

Removing the fuel cap varies depending on your car model – some require manual opening, others have automatic.  

It’s absolutely crucial to ensure you pick the correct fuel type. Putting in the wrong type of fuel can cause havoc for your car’s engine and, in most cases, can end up killing your car.

Diesel fuel will usually have a black pump, while petrol will be green. Do note that petrol is labelled as “unleaded”, or E10 as of recent times.

Next, remove the nozzle from the pump and place it where you removed the fuel cap. Ensure it’s firmly in the car, then squeeze. Keep an eye on the fuel pump monitor to check how much money you’ve spent.

If you want to fill your tank up completely, then wait until it makes a noise. You should hear a distinct thump-like noise when the tank is full.

When finished, return the nozzle to the pump and re-attach your fuel cap. You should re-attach your fuel cap as tight as possible, as this can cause a 15% increase in fuel efficiency, preventing fuel from escaping as vapour when the cap is loose.

Avoid the station after a fuel tank arrives

There isn’t a strict best time of day to fill up a gas tank. However, we’d recommend avoiding the petrol station just after the fuel tank arrives if you can.

Fresh petrol may sound like a good thing, but it tends to carry sediment with it. This sediment can wear down your car’s engine, and isn’t as easily combustible as smooth, sediment-free fuel.

So, what time do petrol stations fill up, exactly? The answer is tricky as it varies on location, company, and the time of year. But generally, most filling stations refill their pumps between the hours of 5am and 10pm; a pretty large window. 

Premium fuel is a nice to have, but it usually costs around £5 more a tank. If you imagine that over the course of a year or the duration of your ownership, it can add up.

If you can afford it, go for it, but for those trying to save money, only opt for it if your car really needs it.

We’d recommend premium fuel for older cars, particularly if you’re nearing an MOT.

Don't wait to fill up on the fuel tank side

Some drivers choose to wait until a pump is available on their fuel tank side. 

You can park at a fuel pump and pull it across to the other side of your car. They’re literally built to do this, so don’t worry too much, and you don’t need to put too much elbow grease in.

As mentioned, mind your etiquette at a fuel station. Try to fill up as smoothly as possible and remember that others are waiting to use the pumps.

Don’t take this time to slowly fill up your car and have a conversation on your phone; obstructive behaviour ends up impacting others.

Don't be tempted to take too much fuel home

There are legal limits on how much petrol or diesel you can fill up and take home. Currently, the law states:

You can store up to 30 litres of fuel at home.

Anything  over 30 litres must be reported to the local Petroleum Enforcement Authority (PEA).

All petrol must be stored in appropriate metal or plastic containers.

The law aside, stay safe when storing petrol – keep them secure and away from any fire hazards.

As the petrol shortage in 2021 showed, stockpiling of fuel can have serious knock-on consequences for the country’s quality of life: be sensible, be realistic and be thoughtful on how much fuel you are using.

Now, this final tip is only for die-hard savers. Using a process called hypermiling, you can make every drop of fuel count.

While filling up your car with fuel might seem like a normal thing, for new drivers, it can feel quite daunting.

Talk to any car enthusiast and they’ll often have a favourite car region. Most often, you’ll find fans of European, American or Japanese cars, irrespective of brand. Some believe the cars perform better, while others prefer them for their small differences, or looks.

However, is there weight to these preferences? Are European, American and Japanese cars so radically different? Since each of these regions have numerous car brands and manufacturers, can they be summed up under one banner?

Below, we explain the key differences between these major car regions and attempt to settle the American vs European vs Japanese car debate.

Whether it’s well-known brands like Aston Martin and Volkswagen, or smaller manufacturers like Renault, European cars have fans all over the world. Typically, European cars enjoy good fuel efficiency, with manufacturers having a penchant for building unassuming, reliable cars.

When judging European vs American cars, or European vs Japanese cars, it’s always a tight race, and the final decision usually comes down to the driver’s preferences. However, European cars do have several distinct benefits.

The reason for this better fuel efficiency lies with fuel prices. Fuel costs, on the whole, are higher in Europe, leading to manufacturers prioritising it during manufacturing; for American manufacturers, power and speed is a bigger priority for the market.

As a result, European cars are built with a stronger focus on fuel efficiency.

American cars have always been built on three tenants: style, power, and affordability. While the nation’s manufacturers have faced tough times, they’re still capable of producing stand-out models.

American cars almost always have a certain look to them. Whether it’s a Ford Fiesta or Mustang, the country is synonymous with distinct, strong-looking vehicles.

In cases like Chrysler, this is complemented by engines which sound powerful on the road. And while it may seem like a small factor, driving a stylish car can translate to a better, more confident driving experience.

For many years, manual cars were the most popular choice in the US. Now, automatic cars rule the roost, leading to the region becoming one of the best producers of automatic cars in the world.

While driving manual cars is still incredibly popular in the UK, Europe and Asia, people are converting to automatic driving in spades.

Given the popularity of automatic driving in the United States in general, it may be better to opt for a car from this region if you prefer automatic.

When people think of electric cars, they almost always think of Tesla. The brand has become synonymous with this vehicle type, and despite stiff competition from brands like BMW, Tesla still delivers the premier electric car experience.

Tesla is a California-based company, giving America a strong edge in the market. For those looking to make the switch to the cars of the future, considering American electric cars, namely Tesla, could be the way forward.

American cars are the go-to for drivers who want to handle the biggest motors. Roads in the US tend to be much wider than roads in Europe or Asia, leading to comparatively huge cars.

American vs European vs Japanese cars. Discover all the differences between the major car producers here.

European, American or Japanese? Key differences between the major car producers

Car pollution isn’t all about carbon dioxide. Before 2015, a low-emission car was simply one that produced a low volume of carbon dioxide – the pollutant was seen as the major concern, so others weren’t given as much focus.

However, in 2015, car manufacturer Volkswagen found itself at the heart of a scandal known as “dieselgate”. The manufacturer was caught red-handed intentionally using emissions controls during laboratory testing only, meaning its cars produced up to 40 times more nitrogen oxide in actual driving than reported.

This put nitrogen oxide, and its damaging effects on public health, into the limelight. Now, carbon dioxide isn’t the only emission car manufacturers need to control.

Why is nitrogen oxide pollution so dangerous, how do cars produce it, what are its effects and why are car manufacturers so concerned about it? We’ll tell you all the car pollution facts you need to know, below.

What is nitrogen oxide and how do cars produce it?

Nitrogen oxide in cars is nothing new. Airborne nitrogen, in isolation, isn’t harmful to humans. It makes up 80% of our atmosphere, but it becomes particularly troublesome when it becomes bonded with another element: oxygen.

So, how are nitrogen oxides produced and formed? When a car engine runs, it causes combustion by heating up quickly. This process acts as a catalyst which binds together nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O2) to form nitric oxide (NO) or nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Both are described generically as nitrogen oxide (NOx). This isn’t the intended result, so nitrogen oxide is just a by-product.

In sterile lab conditions, pure combustion uses hydrocarbons (gasoline, diesel, etc.) and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. The world, however, isn’t a lab, and car manufacturers need to factor in and reduce the production of unwanted by-products.

One key aspect of achieving more power through a car engine is to produce more oxygen. More oxygen allows gas to burn even quicker, which results in more power. The cylinders used within car engines can only hold so much oxygen, to which a process called ‘forced induction’ acts as a potential cure via turbochargers.

Turbochargers act much like engine pistons, in the sense that they push even more air into oxygen cylinders. This results in a higher volume of fuel combustion and, subsequently, produces more power.

However, there is one other way of injecting even more oxygen into a cylinder using nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is a gas that was discovered in the late 1700s and it was primarily used for medical reasons like pain relief. 

In the motoring industry, nitrous oxide is more commonly referred to as ‘NOS’. NOS stands for ‘Nitrous Oxide System’, a process by which nitrous oxide is used within a car to push more oxygen into the cylinder. As shown by movies like Fast and Furious, the nitrous gas is kept within a cannister and connected to the car’s fuel delivery system. When the driver wishes to use the nitrous for an increased jolt of speed, they simply press a button that releases the nitrous oxide into their engine.

It is important, however, to remember the difference between nitrogen oxide and nitrous oxide.  Nitrogen is an element made from two nitrogen atoms (N2), whereas nitrous oxide is a chemical compound made of two nitrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule (N2O). 

If nitrogen oxide was harmless, then there wouldn’t be any problems. Even if the effects were small, there wouldn’t be as much widespread concern over its production.

Nitrogen oxide pollution, however, has profound negative effects on public health. In the UK, the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants has stated that “studies of long-term exposure to NO2 report associations with all-cause, respiratory and cardiovascular mortality, children’s respiratory symptoms and lung function.”

There is a range of other diseases that have had a causal link to nitrogen oxide, too. As you can see from just this shortlist, the side effects of NOx emissions from cars is  a cause of concern for manufacturers, city councils and governments.

What type of fuel produces more nitrogen oxide?

When it comes to buying a car, you may want to consider the environmental consequences of your purchase.

While diesel engines tend to have better fuel efficiency, it comes at a cost. You may expect diesel to win the NOx emissions diesel vs gasoline fight, but the result is the opposite.

Better efficiency means diesel engines operate at a higher temperature and pressure than their petrol counterparts. This increases the volatility of combustion, leading to the production of stronger, more abundant nitrogen oxide.

Petrol engines still produce nitrogen oxide, but not to the same volume as diesel engines. This doesn’t mean petrol engines don’t need to be modernised and changed, as the volume they produce can still be a threat to public health.

Do older cars produce more nitrogen oxide?

By and large, yes. Newer models have made an effort to reduce the production of nitrogen oxide, with these models producing more carbon dioxide than older versions to compensate.

While newer cars may produce more carbon dioxide than older vehicles, they produce considerably less carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. The increase in carbon dioxide is minimal, too, compared to the much larger decrease in other pollutants.

For modern cars, it’s better to have a slight increase in carbon dioxide production if it means harmful gases are reduced.

How to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in cars?

With the negative effects of nitrogen oxide well documented, car manufacturers have been on the hunt for ways to reduce its presence in modern vehicles. Here’s how to reduce NOX emissions in cars:

The Euro emissions standards are a set of rules that all car manufacturers must comply with that dictate the maximum number of emissions that a car can legally produce. First introduced in 1992 alongside the mandatory inclusion of catalytic converters, these standards have played a crucial role in reducing the number of emissions that our cars produce. 

Statistics show that as of 2017, nitrogen oxide emissions are down 84% as a result of these rules since 2001. 

To further optimise the number of emissions that our cars produce, an additional metric has been introduced to the Euro emissions standards. 

From September 2017 onwards, cars must undergo a series of tests to ensure that they meet any new standards in actual driving circumstances. Real Driving Emissions (RDE) tests shall include a mixture of regular and motorway driving to determine how a car performs in the real world. This will push manufacturers to focus on the real-world effects of their emission reduction, instead of focusing on synthetic benchmarks.  

One critical way in which nitrogen oxide emissions is reduced in cars is through the use of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). In a process like condensing boilers, EGR uses exhaust gas from a car’s engine and rediverts it back into the engine cylinder. 

This effectively reduces both the amount of oxygen in the cylinder and the temperature of the cylinder to help produce fewer volatile emissions.

What is nitrogen oxide and how do cars create it?

Unfortunately, for many vehicles, there comes a time when they are no longer fit for the road. At which point, owners have a few options: they can sell it, have it scrapped, or work on it themselves to get it road-ready once again. 

It’s an understandably confusing scenario, as many drivers fear that they must continue to pay for road tax and car insurance even if they’re not driving the car. 

Thankfully, there is a solution available. If your car is going to be out of service for quite some time, it may be a good idea to apply for a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN) through the DVLA. Doing so avoids having to pay any tax and insurance fees, and is completely free to arrange.

If you’ve never heard of it, you may be wondering: what does SORN mean? Put simply, a SORN is a way of telling the DVLA that a car will not be driven on the road for the foreseeable future. The exact reason is mostly unimportant, provided that the car does not make its way onto public roads while the SORN is active. 

A SORN is typically used when a vehicle has broken down on private property and is unable to be driven to a place for repairs, is not taxed or insured, or is purely being kept off the road for decorative purposes.

As long as it’s not on a public road, SORN vehicles can be kept anywhere the owner would like. Garages and lockups are usually preferred, as this keeps the car protected from changes in the weather and theft. SORN vehicles cannot be kept on roadsides, car parks, gardens, or pavements. 

How do I get my car back on the road after a SORN?

If your car is now drivable and you wish to return it to the public road, now comes the time to reverse the notification with the DVLA. Here’s how to get your SORN car back on the road:

1. Ensure your car is roadworthy: First, you must make sure that your car can be safely driven without any mechanical issues. Consider paying a mechanic to come and inspect your car to assess any remaining damage before you consider the following steps.

2. Insurance: Before you drive anywhere, the car must have a valid insurance policy tied to it. Driving without car insurance is a serious offence and can potentially land you with a fine or points on your license.

3. MOT: With your car taxed and insured, it also helps to make sure it has an up-to-date MOT from a reliable garage. This ensures that it is roadworthy and fully legal to drive.

Reverting a SORN is relatively straightforward; all you have to do is get the car taxed again. This can be done either through the DVLA website or over the phone. Make sure you have the 11-digit reference number on the car’s V5C to hand. 

Can you drive a SORN car to MOT without insurance?

While a SORN is in place, it can still be driven to and from a scheduled MOT appointment. Though, you must have some form of proof for the MOT appointment, as if you are stopped by the police, they will require you to provide this information. Failing to present it may result in prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500. 

Thankfully, arranging a SORN does not cancel your car insurance. The reason is that your cover can remain in place in case you decide to start driving the vehicle again. This prevents you from having to re-instate your insurance and paying an upfront fee; a great benefit if the vehicle is only off the road temporarily.

Some insurance companies do offer packages designed for SORN cars, where the prices are decreased slightly due to the car not being used as much. This is especially useful for things like project cars undergoing a full re-build. 

Alongside SORN, there are loads of other obscure abbreviations and phrases involved with buying a car. Whether it’s on the servicing and maintenance side or on the motoring finance side of the fence, knowing where you stand is tricky.
